CHAPTER ELEVEN

Carmelita

I try not to enjoy Liam snuggled up to me on the ride back. There’s so much weirdness between us right now that I can’t get optimistic about our relationship. Speaking of weirdness, it doesn’t help that we’re riding in a tractor-pulling sled driven by the county sheriff, who is dressed like a cowboy Santa.

“Are y’all coming to the parade tonight?” Bradley asks.

“I’ll leave that up to Carmelita. She’s been jerked around town a lot today,” Liam answers.

I relax against his chest, happy he’d take that into consideration.

“She’s got to see the parade,” Bradley suggests. He turns to me. “A parade is where all these decorated cars, and trucks, and tractors, and animals ride through town.”

I squint, trying my best not to sound insulted. “We have parades where I grew up.”

“For real?”

“Yeah, the Parade of Pearls is the most popular.”

“That’s a cool name,” Liam says.

“Thanks. Everyone wears their best pearls and we decorate all the floats with pearls.”

“Makes ours sound even more redneck.” He laughs.

Bradley scoffs. “As grand marshal, I take offense.”

Liam rolls his eyes. Bradley straightens his fake beard and stares at the road ahead. After an awkward moment of silence, he speaks up. “If y’all decide to come, let me know. I’ll find you a spot in the VIP section in front of the Pig.”

“I appreciate it,” Liam says. He pinches my side.

I snap my head toward him, and he winks. My neck and face warm as I smile before leaning my head back against him. I’m thinking I don’t want to go to the parade. We need some time to talk about whatever is going on between us.

Bradley whistles along with a song on the radio as we drive the last stretch of road to the city hall. He parks us as close to Liam’s truck as possible without getting in the way of other vehicles.

“All right, y’all. Santa’s got more work to do. I’m gonna unload what’s left of G-Maw’s donations inside. I wanted Lina’s kids to get first pick.”

We follow him out of the cab, and Liam shakes his hand. Bradley pulls him in for a tight hug. “You’re all grown up on me, boy.”

“Good to see you too, Bradley.”

He finally releases Liam, who nods awkwardly. Bradley tips his hat and heads toward the building while we get in Liam’s truck. Once we’re in the truck, Liam watches Bradley out the window. “Hard to believe I once wanted my sister to marry that guy.”

“He’s nice,” I comment.

Liam laughs, and I join him.

“Let’s get back to my house before something else crazy happens.”

He puts the truck in gear and turns out of the parking lot. I stare out my window. I’ve never had to start a conversation with someone about a kiss. Partly because the only person I’ve kissed before today was Antonio.

Even stranger is that anytime I broke things off with him, he left with a smirk of confidence, as if I’d said we would pick things up later. In his mind—and my parents’—we would.
